What's New in The Journal 5
Here's a brief list of what's new in The Journal 5:
- New calendar category (used to be called standard categories) options: Beyond daily, weekly, and monthly entries, you can have entries every 1-12 hours. Plus, you can even have entries for a year, decade or century (for people who think long term or are writing histories). Check out "New Category..." to see all the options.
- Choose which calendar entry levels to display: century, decade, year, month, or day (Category Properties, "Calendar" tab).
- Change the date and/or time of a calendar entry (Entry menu, "Change entry date/time").
- Select multiple entries (with sub-entries) in the entry tree and copy them to the clipboard. Paste them into another category (of the same type) or even paste them as a consolidated whole into another program, like MS Word.
- Calendar category entries can now have sub-entries (the sub-entries are loose-leaf entries; hot-key: F10). You can even have loose-leaf entries at the top level of a calendar category (hot-key: Shift+F9).
- Monthly calendar view and (horizontal) year calendar view of entries and reminders (click on the month name or the year in the entry tree).
- Day/week planner views of active reminders (see "Show day planner with reminders" option and sub-options in Category Properties).
- New backup options: automatically copy your backup files to another location on your hard drive or network, or even FTP the backup file to a remote server.
- Improved Restore from Backup process.
- Backup settings are now in User Preferences.
- User interface has been improved and re-organized. There are all new toolbar/menu icons, and a new set of Calendar Charms.
- User interface "skins" (Look in User Preferences, on the "Global" tab) and support for Vista UI options. My favorites are: the default ("BlueBrilliant"), "Bionix2", "Energy_Yellow", and "VXPremium".
- Improved support for foreign languages.
- WYSIWYG editing of entries (Category Properties, on the "Entry" tab).
- You can have multiple Journal Volumes and users open at the same time in an easy-to-use tabbed interface.
- Search Entries can now search in reminder titles and notes, and there is a new "match whole words" option.
- New report: New & Updated Entries Report (on the Tools menu).
- New HTML entry export option to create a Web-page interface with a list of categories and entries exported.
- Extended Security option for maximum number of failures before automatic failure has been extended to unlocking The Journal after a minimize or hide. Plus, there is now a report of the number of failed login attempts since the last successful login.
- Editor state (cursor position, selected text) can now be saved between sessions of The Journal. This option defaults to "on" for loose-leaf categories and "off" for calendar categories.
- Entry links now automatically update themselves (if the entry is renamed or moved). Also, entries with entry links that are exported and imported are automatically updated (whenever possible). Plus improvements to the "Insert Link" command, especially in regards to entry links. Finally, bookmarks are now displayed with an icon along the left side of the editor.
- Topics have been extended to support sub-topics, and whole entries can now be "tagged" with one or topics (not just blocks of text). Also, topics now automatically update themselves when they are renamed or deleted. Finally, there are new options in "Search Entries by Topic": you can now search for entries with *any* of the selected topics, or only for entries that include *all* of the selected topics.
- "Insert Media File (Audio/Video)" is a new command on the Insert menu. It allows storage of most types of audio and video clips in an entry. And the attached media can be played with a double-click.
- "Grammar Checking" section of Editor preferences (in User Preferences): replace i with I; and auto-capitalize first word of a sentence.
Here's a brief list of what's new that you might not notice so much:
- Totally new database engine.
- Overhauled internal data structures for efficiency and new organizational options.
- Unicode support throughout the software.
- Lots of minor fixes from The Journal 4.
And there's still more to come.
The new help file is one of the things "still to come". Please be patient.
